Heavy wind, rain predicted; Eversource has crews on standby for outages

It’s the first day of winter but there’s no snow in the forecast. Instead, there is rain _ and lots of it.

The city is under a flood watch until 1 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22 and a high wind warning until 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.

New Bedford’s predicted total rainfall 1.5 to 2,” with higher amounts possible in certain areas, according to New Bedford Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.

The biggest change from previous forecasts is that maximum wind gusts have gone up to 55 to 60 mph. Sustained winds should peak mid-day and last into this evening.

Heaviest rains will happen this afternoon into the evening hours. Officials are still monitoring this evening’s tide for minor coast flooding. Next low tide in New Bedford Harbor is approximately 12:21 p.m., with the high tide later at 6:42 p.m.
