Message from the Chief of Police

Chief of Police - Joseph C. Cordeiro

On behalf of the men and women of the New Bedford Police Department, I would like to welcome you to our website. I would also like to invite you to visit any of our four police stations in the north, south, west and downtown neighborhoods of our city. Our organization is comprised of highly trained and dedicated professionals who serve our community with respect and empathy.

I am very passionate and proud to have served the citizens of New Bedford for the past thirty years. During this time, I have had the good fortune of working with some of the most talented and committed police officers in the state. I am humbled and grateful for their dedication, professionalism and service. Over the past three decades, I have seen many changes, but our traditional organizational values have remained constant.

I love the city of New Bedford, and I am very enthusiastic about the pride and synergy that runs through our community and our police department. I am a firm believer in the community policing philosophy and the importance of continually nurturing the relationship between the police department and the community. We need to invest in our community by caring, so that together we ensure our community is safe, strong and secure.

Caring requires everyone to be engaged and involved. To do this, I ask you to join us in creating a "CITY OF ONE." We do not have the luxury to sit idle. We must attend neighborhood meetings, volunteer, mentor, communicate with and invest in one another. We must continue to build partnerships and relationships, and in doing so, we will identify our similarities and appreciate our differences. In the end, we will come to realize that we are one in the same; a "CITY OF ONE."

I am dedicated to lead our department and represent this city with a keen eye toward the new challenges of the future with the compassion, collaboration and consistency that I have always been committed to. I am interested in hearing your concerns, thoughts, complaints and praises, so please feel free to email me at anytime. If you prefer, I can also be reached in person at our Headquarters facility located at 871 Rockdale Avenue during normal business hours or by phone at 508-991-6300 extension 79452.

I thank you for the privilege of serving as your Chief of Police, and I thank you for helping me protect our city.

Joseph C. Cordeiro
