New Bedford Police Arrest Pickpocket Suspect and Issue Safety Warning to Holiday Shoppers

This holiday season, while the excitement fills the air, it’s crucial to remember that the holiday rush often leads to an uptick in criminal activity. The New Bedford Police Department is urging everyone to be extra cautious to avoid falling victim to pickpockets and thieves.

“It’s no secret when you live in New England, the holidays are the very best part of the winter. We want you to go out and about and have a great time while you’re out there doing your thing, shopping for gifts, visiting with friends and family, getting packages delivered to you, we want you to be as safe as possible,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Scott Carola. “Whenever you’re out and about, the potential for larcenies goes up, and that’s exactly what happened last week at a small convenience store on County Street.”

On November 26th, a 65-year-old New Bedford resident entered a local convenience store on County Street. Surveillance video shows 47-year-old Daniel Raposo distracting the 65-year-old man while stealing an envelope containing $1,400 from his back pocket.

Raposo was arrested and charged with larceny, and assault and battery on a person aged 60 and older. Unfortunately, officers discovered that the money he stole had already been spent.

“Thanks to the surveillance video and the follow-up from the police officers who investigated this case, I’m proud to announce we were able to take this suspect under arrest,” said Carola. “Unfortunately, the money was all gone by the time that we did. But any time we arrest a suspect like this, it prevents another person from being victimized.”

The NBPD wants to remind everyone to always be aware of your surroundings, keep valuables close, and avoid displaying expensive items in public. If you’re carrying a purse or backpack, make sure it’s securely fastened and within reach at all times.

“When you’re walking to your vehicle from the car, when you’re standing in line at the store, what’s sticking out of your pocket? What’s sticking out of your pocketbook? Is it secure to you? Your vehicle – is it locked in the parking lot? These are all things that you should think about in order to keep yourself and your property safe,” added Carola.

Consider using a crossbody bag or money belt, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Don’t forget to stay alert and keep an eye on your belongings.

“People that are out there robbing from others, out there stealing packages, they’re watching. What they don’t count on is you watching them. So when you see something suspicious, it’s important that you trust your instincts and give us a call,” said Carola.

By following these simple precautions, you can ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday season.
