Spots still available at Citizens Police Academy

A few places still remain for the New Bedford Police Citizens Police Academy, which returns May 23.

Participants have the chance to ride along in a cruiser, obtain CPR certification, learn about firearms and experience the rewards and challenges of being a New Bedford police officer. They can also learn about the SafetyNet program, as depicted in this photo from the previous citizens police academy. 

The academy begins May 23, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., at the police training academy, 1204 Purchase St. The first class will serve as an introduction to the program and will also feature CPR training.

 

The remainder of the schedule is:

 

May 30, active shooter training, juvenile/domestic violence issues, 6-9 p.m., police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave.

 

June 6, Presentation on narcotics, gangs, community outreach programs and Narcan, 6-9 p.m., police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave.

 

June 13, Presentation on Port Security, dive and K-9 teams, 6-9 p.m., police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave.

 

June 17, Firearms, police range, Dartmouth, 9 a.m. to noon.

 

June 20, Defensive tactics, 6 to 9 p.m., police training academy, 1204 Purchase St.

 

June 24, Safetynet presentation and live demonstration, 9 a.m. to noon, police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave., and Buttonwood Park.

 

June 27, First Aid, 6-9 p.m., police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave.

 

July 8, Ridealong with Port Security, 9 a.m. to noon, waterfront.

 

Anyone 18 or older who is interested should complete an application which could be obtained on the New Bedford Police Department’s web page. Visit newbedfordpd.com and click on forms, then citizens police academy.
