NBPD helps children use bike helmets safely

Station 3 Commander Capt. Amos Melo, top, and Community Police Officer Tony Pereira visited children at the P.A.C.E Family Center at Hayden-McFadden Elementary School Wednesday April 18 to teach the youngsters about bicycle safety and to make sure they were wearing their helmets correctly.

Gently used bicycles donated by Mass in Motion were presented to children in the program, which prepares children from birth to age five and their families for a successful transition to elementary school. Brand new helmets were also donated by Boston Medical Center Health Net Plan. Capt. Melo and Officer Pereira made sure the helmets were worn securely and properly to provide the best possible protection.

Officer Pereira also offered safety tips, stressing the importance of wearing helmets at all times, using reflectors, making sure parents are with riders to ensure they stay safe.

“We hope you enjoy your summer with your bikes,” PACE/Child Care Works Family Center coordinator Raquel Ayala told the children.
