Former NHL All-Star shares fight with opioids at Oct. 14 event

Kevin Stevens was a tough and talented hockey player _ but his biggest battle was off the ice, with opioid addiction.
And after years of aiming for the net, he now has a new goal: To stop the opioid epidemic, especially among young people.
He will be a guest speaker at a drug awareness program to be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at UMass Dartmouth auditorium.
Kevin Stevens was an NHL All-Star who struggled with addiction for more than two decades, from trying drugs for the first time to rebuilding his life one day at a time since entering sobriety.
The drug awareness program is sponsored by Power Forward, the initiative founded by Mr. Stevens, and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New England Field Division/New Bedford Resident Office. The program is free and includes guest speakers from the DEA, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Bristol County District Attorney’s office and other agencies. There will also be information on opioids, addiction awareness and rehabilitation options.
The program aims to make a difference in the Bristol County opioid epidemic.
